For baby gifts I work almost exclusively with scrap yarn, so choosing colors is both a fun and difficult challenge. I store my yarn in Ikea bags and when I have an idea I just pull what I like and organize it on the ping pong table. I pull and add until I have the pounds of yarn I think I’ll need.

I usually pull out my phone to help me make sure I have a balance in value of the colors. Viewing the colors through a black-and-white lens helps me decide where colors should go in an afghan. I like a super-scrappy look, but I don’t want something to look messy or haphazard.

I used Photobooth on my laptop to shoot a quick tutorial of what I mean. I hope you find it valuable for your color selection.

My mom gets a lot of questions on her blog about color selection and has answered them in a series of posts. (What can I say? I learn from the best!) She does a great job working with recycled and found fabrics for super-scrappy quilts and often makes Bonnie Hunter patterns. Check those out here.

    • This was very helpful. I knit and quilt all the time with scraps and often, really often, have trouble putting colours together. Now I would have put thebright green that went in to your darks into the light basket. So helpful. Look forward to seeing the finished product.
